Here we are again; the autumnal equinox is on Monday! Let’s welcome the actual fall with this warm, cozy, apple cinnamony, fally Paleo Apple Crisps, whew. The temps may still be summer like, but the air has changed, and the sun is sinking sooner. Don’t be sad, we have all the fun fall flavors to indulge in! Like these apple crisps! They are a simple, delicious, heart and tummy warming treat. Baked in individual ramekins make them a perfect dinner party dessert.
I have actually been in fall mode right after Labor Day, but I guess technically, it’s still Summer until Monday. Apples though, are a summer to fall fruit and work in either season. I typically prefer apple desserts in the fall with delicious warm spices that give me that snuggy feeling. These are Paleo by using no refined sugar, wheat/grain and dairy free. So, all wholesome good for you ingredients, plus the individual size is made for cleaning your plate or ramekin, in this case, without any guilt! Don’t get me wrong, these are not low calorie and are still an indulgence. Like most things in life, moderation and portion control is key! But you can feel good about the quality ingredients and consuming real food!
I am really going to try and make it to an apple orchard this year. Although, I just heard because of some bad weather earlier in the year, a lot of the orchards near me have apple shortages! Noooo! Hopefully though, the later varieties will be ripe for the picking! I love baking with apples all season long. Apples are best picked directly from the tree! I want to bring my littlest niece too and dress her up in some cute fally clothes and turn her into an orchard baby. Anyway, nothing like taking a bite out of an apple picked! I can remember when I was a kid and in horseback riding, our trainer had a couple of apple trees on her farm. We went back to pick some for the horses and of course some for us! One for you and two for me! I still remember biting into that sweet crisp apple, and it was the best apple I ever ate! I will be making apple desserts all season long, pies, apple butter, applesauce, apple toasts, apple muffins, already shared by apple spice cinnamon rolls…I could go on, but I won’t, lots and lots of apples!
Back to the now and these Paleo Apple Crisps. I use a coconut milk and coconut sugar mixture to coat the apples in a spoon licking filling. Then more cinnamon, coconut sugar and pecans and almonds for the crumble.
Here’s the what the crumble will look like after a few pulses in the old processor. Generously top the apples with cinnamon crumble goodness, don’t be shy.
Fresh out of the oven, all bubbly and golden browny.
All topped off with a paleo ice cream, Fronen, made with only 4 ingredients and no refined sugar! Perfect icing or ice cream on the crisp!
Just look at those perfectly tender apples, glistening in that spoon licking sauce, and that golden browny crumble all with those spices warming you just looking at it! But don’t just look at it, eat it, eat it all!
It’s virtually impossible for you not to clean your bowl…er, ramekin.
So, jump on the apple train with me and celebrate fall this weekend starting with these Apple Crisps! Pairs perfectly with a big ol’ glass of red (switching from the rose’ to red season). It is the weekend after all. They will have you dreaming of all things apple all the time!
Happy Weekending and Autumnal Equinoxing!

- 4 medium apples, cored peeled and sliced (2 granny smith 2 honey crisp)

- 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
- ½ tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. cassava flour
- 1 tsp. arrowroot starch
- 2 tbsp. apple brandy (can sub apple cider)
- ¼ cup date nectar (I use D'vash)
- ¼ cup coconut brown sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- ½ tsp. cardamom
- ¼ tsp. nutmeg
- ⅛ tsp. all spice
- For the Crumble:
- ¾ cup cassava flour
- 6 tbsp. cubed vegan butter
- ¼ cup pecans
- ¼ cup almonds
- ½ tsp. of salt
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- ½ tsp. cardamom
- ½ cup coconut brown sugar
- For the Crumble:
- Add all the dry ingredients and nuts into the bowl of a food processor fitted with an s-blade. Pulse a couple times to combine and crumble the nuts. Sprinkle the cubed vegan butter over the top of the mixed dry and pulse about 10 to 20 more times until a course crumb is formed. Set aside or place in the fridge while you prepare the apples.
- For the Apples:
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly spray four, 4 inch ramekins (about 6 to 10oz) with cooking spray and set on a baking sheet and set aside.
- Peel, core and slice the apples into thin ¼ inch slices. Place in a large bowl.
- In a separate medium bowl add the coconut milk, coconut sugar, date nectar, apple brandy, vanilla extract, spices, cassava flour and arrowroot starch and whisk to combine. Pour mixture over sliced apples and mix to coat all the apples.
- Divide apple mixture evenly over the apples in the four ramekins. Spoon any leftover liquids equally among the ramekins.
- Add the crumble generously over the tops of the apples (you will have a little left over). Bake in the middle rack for 25 to 30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes for the filling to set up some. Serve warm with non-dairy ice cream or ice cream of choice if desired. Best served day of. Can store crisps covered in the fridge for one day. Gently re-heat in the microwave in 30 second intervals until warmed through.
- Enjoy!
